“Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated. And it will, therefore, increase the effectiveness of the decisions we make and try to implement for our development. My generation led Africa to political freedom. The current generation of leaders and peoples of Africa must pick up the flickering torch of African freedom, refuel it with their enthusiasm and determination, and carry it forward. -Julius Nyerere
Julius Nyerere, former President of Tanzania and political revolutionary, believed that Africa will thrive once her people unified in their quest for development and equity. Julius Nyerere’s words are a call for action to every African youth that we must find an African solution to our problems. We cannot wait for outsiders to fix the problems we have at home, we must unite and work towards our own prosperity.
Scholars in Our Society and Afrika seeks to present Africa in a new light, reflective of the beauty, opportunity, and the excellence of our continent. We believe that through discourse and active engagement it is possible to change the narrative often portrayed of war, conflict, and hunger. SOSA will begin to organize hopefully an annual conference on Cornell University’s campus to unite the youth interested in entrepreneurship, medicine, women empowerment, technology, and development in Africa as a whole.
Scholars in Our Society and Afrika presents to you the 2019 Cornell African Development Conference:
Re-Presenting Africa which will be held on October 18- 19, 2019.
